11-year-old cyclist killed after being struck by train in Ghent

An 11-year-old cyclist was killed on Tuesday afternoon after a collision with a passing train at the railway crossing on the Wiedauwkaai in Ghent. The public prosecutor of East Flanders speaks about a tragic traffic accident.

The collision took place on Tuesday afternoon. The 11-year-old Slovakian boy was grabbed by a passing train at the railway crossing on the Wiedauwkaai in Ghent. All help came too late and the child died on the spot.

A traffic expert is now investigating the accident. “From the first findings and camera images it already appears that the person involved ignored the signage and drove through the barriers,” the East Flanders prosecutor’s office said.

The incident meant that train traffic between Ghent and Eeklo was halted for a long time. The occupants of the affected Eeklo – Oudenaarde train were then evacuated. The NMBS temporarily did use replacement buses and traffic resumed after 4 p.m.
