11 US senators belonging to the Republican Party declared that they could not admit the results of the US presidential election held in November last year on the 2nd (local time).
According to Reuters, 11 Republican lawmakers, headed by Rep. Ted Cruz (Texas), made a joint statement on the same day and announced that they would vote against the results of the elections vote at a joint meeting of the House and Senate on the 6th.
They insisted that an emergency election committee be formed immediately to hear the results of the presidential election.
The actions of the lawmakers who made a statement that day are contrary to the policy of the Senate Republican leadership. Senate Republican leadership has avoided controversy over presidential election results as much as possible, saying that the Senate’s role in certifying election results is mostly ceremonial.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell also warned members of the same party not to disagree with the election results.
Accordingly, the movement of 11 members, including Congressman Cruise, is unlikely to prevent Joe Biden from taking office, Reuters said.
Under the 1887 Act, members of the Senate and House of Representatives may jointly file an objection against the state counts. However, with the Democratic Party dominating the majority of the House, there is virtually no chance of this happening.
Biden-elect has already secured a 306 electoral corps, beat President Trump (232) and won the inauguration ceremony on the 20th.
