New Delhi –
A young woman in India kidnapped, raped in turns and paraded through the streets New Delhi in broad daylight. A total of 11 people, including several women, have been arrested by Indian police in this case.
As reported AFPOn Saturday (29/1/2022), the case, which has highlighted the prevalence of sexual violence in India, has sparked widespread criticism, including from the New Delhi Commission for Women and the Chief Minister of New Delhi, who called it ‘shameful’.
Video footage circulating on social media, which could not be independently verified, shows the victim – whose face was blackened with ink and her hair cut – being pushed and jeered by a number of women with onlookers cheering and recording on mobile phones.
The victim is said to be a 21-year-old young woman who is married and has a two-year-old child.
Deputy Commissioner of local Police, R Sathiyasundaram, said the incident occurred in Shahdara district, eastern New Delhi, on Wednesday (26/1) local time. According to Sathiyasundaram, the incident occurred as a result of a ‘previous feud’ between the neighbours.
He did not explain in detail about the trigger of the incident. But local media reports said a 16-year-old boy, who was a relative of the perpetrators, killed himself by jumping in front of an oncoming train after the victim rejected his love.
“All 11 people arrested including two minors, who cannot be tried as adults, belong to the same family and the videos clearly show the women on the front lines,” Sathiyasundaram told reporters. AFP.
