Rhea, the wife of Kronos and the mother of Zeus, deservedly became the protagonist of the Greek spring festival already in ancient times. According to mythology, Kronos swallowed their first five children, fearing that they would threaten his power, and finally their youngest brother, Zeus, saved his brothers and sisters from death: in the end, the three brothers shared the rule of the world, and their three sisters lived as goddesses on Olympus . The Greeks honored Rhea as the mother of the gods, and dedicated their spring festival to her, which is the origin of today’s Mother’s Day. Later, early Christians dedicated the fourth Sunday of Lent to the Virgin Mary, and in 17th-century England, the commemoration extended to all mothers, and the date was moved to the fourth Sunday after Easter. Its significance has not changed, but its form has changed even more – let’s prepare together for Mother’s Day!

Here, in 1925, when the Hungarian Youth Red Cross held the first Mother’s Day celebration, it connected it with the May cult of Mary, so its meaning was always connected with the veneration of the Mother of God. It has been celebrated as an official holiday since 1928 on the first Sunday of May. In other parts of the world and in different countries of Europe, mothers are commemorated at different times: there is hardly a month of the year when there is not a Mother’s Day celebration around the world.
