150 films from around the world were celebrated in 2024
Created by Ingrid and Sonia Jean-Baptiste, a mother-daughter duo from Paris, the Chelsea Film Festival quickly established itself as an unmissable event on the New York film scene. This year again, the festival remains true to its commitment to ” to inspire new and independent leaders from around the world », summarizes Ingrid. A goal that perfectly reflects the open mind of the French, who settled in New York in 2010. “I consider myself a citizen of the world, she explains. I like to be with people who come from everywhere, that’s how I get the most wealth.” For its twelfth edition, the Chelsea Film Festival it will screen 150 films from 22 countries.
A platform that expands and incubates talent
Established in 2013 with the screening of 17 international films, the Chelsea Film Festival has continued to develop since its creation. This year, for the first time, the event will be held over five days instead of the usual four. The festival, however, is faithful to its original mission, and this is what makes it successful, according to Ingrid. ” My goal from the beginning was to help young leaders from around the world, to give them a platform. Persistence really means remembering the original mission, and trying to respond to it.” she says. In 2023, the festival dedicated to the seventh art created its incubator, allowing directors at the beginning of their career to create their first or second short film. ” We support them for nine months with mentors and give them the equipment for free. Then they will have the opportunity to show their film during the festival, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity », Ingrid estimates.
“We are ambassadors for France”
Among the 150 films offered this year, 11 French films are part of the official selection: 2 documentaries, 8 short films and 1 independent documentary. ” It is not the signature of the festival, but the French presence is important because we, the organizers, are French. Thanks to this festival, we are ambassadors of France,” affirms Ingrid, who was also the winner of the 2023 United States French Awards Culture / Living Arts Cup.
