Experimental work in geography lessons: On the didactics day of the 10th Hamburg Geography Symposium, a joint experiment on the topic “How do ocean currents arise?” will be carried out.
“Changing oceans” – this was the focus of the tenth event Hamburg Geography Symposium. Prof. Beate MW Ratter from CEN coordinates the recurring training for geography teachers. Research results on socially relevant topics in the department are presented, didactic methods are discussed and the teaching of the content in lessons is tested in practice. A publication is published for each symposium. The 10th volume is now available.
Tons of plastic waste, overfishing and pollution from sea transport – the problems of the world’s oceans are glaring. At the same time, their importance as a supplier of energy and raw materials, as a source of food and as a transport route is growing. In addition, the oceans are coming under dramatic pressure due to climate change. The 10th Geography Symposium therefore focused on the topic in 2018 and will now take place regularly again.
The situation in the oceans has deteriorated in almost all areas in recent years. This makes it all the more important to impart knowledge beyond a purely scientific context and especially to young people. “We want to discuss, reflect and inspire each other together again on site. It remains important to point out geographical, social and political connections and to raise awareness of the impact of our trade, especially in geography lessons,” says Prof. Ratter.
The first part of the two-part symposium is to provide specialist information to teachers. Scientists pass on current research findings in lectures. In the second part, the transfer of this knowledge is tested didactically. In addition to specific teaching methods, experiments for school lessons are explained. These are intended to clearly explain the knowledge to students.
The series of publications for the symposium documents the events and contains scientific contributions, didactic methods and materials for teaching. It is a cooperation between the Institute of Geography at the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg State Institute for Teacher Training and School Development, the Hamburg Geographical Society, the Association of German School Geographers and the Hamburg State Association
