10:27 a.m. – Holidaymakers not yet ready to rent an electric vehicle

Tourists still prefer to bet on a combustion engine when they have to rent a vehicle at their holiday destination. The share of electric vehicle reservations is just 0.22%, according to an estimate provided by German car rental price comparison platform Billiger-Mietwagen.de on Saturday.”There is a clear preference for the combustion engine because these types of vehicles are offered in large numbers by service providers and the public is more familiar with this carburation”, explains a spokesperson for the platform. He adds that in the United States, Spain and Germany, there is now a fairly wide range of electric vehicles. But these cars are generally more expensive and many holidaymakers don’t want the hassle of searching for charging stations and wasting time waiting at a terminal. Furthermore, the proportion of homes in Europe that offer on-site charging solutions is quite low. Over the past 12 months, the number of days booked via the German platform with an electric vehicle was only 2,500, of which 77% in Spain, 10% in France and 2% in Germany. In Spain, the Balearic region is working to promote electric motorization by investing in charging facilities and creating dedicated parking spaces for electric vehicles in tourist areas, where cars can be charged for free. On the island of Formentera, the number of cars is also limited, except for electric vehicles which are not subject to such quotas. (Belga)
