Japanese princess Yuriko Mikasa passed away at the age of 101. Recently her health has deteriorated significantly.

About this writes independent.co.uk.

The Imperial Household Administration announced a week ago that the princess’s condition had worsened due to dysfunction of her internal organs.

Before her illness, she lived an active life. Every morning began with a fitness program on TV. She also read newspapers and enjoyed watching the news and baseball.

The princess was the oldest member of the imperial family.

Yuriko Mikasa was born in 1923 into the family of a member of the House of Lords. It saw the reign of four emperors: Taisho, Showa, Heisei and Reiwa.

At age 18, she married Prince Mikasa, the younger brother of Emperor Showa (reigned 1926 to 1989) and great-uncle of the current Emperor Naruhito. Shortly after the wedding, the Pacific War began between Japan and the United States.

The family raised five children, of whom only two are still alive.

After the war, the princess devoted herself to helping people: she was honorary vice-president of the Japanese Red Cross Society. For many years she served as president of the Association for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood.
