100 thousand displaced people from southern Lebanon due to Israeli bombing
Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib reported today, Monday, that about 100,000 people were displaced from southern Lebanon as a result of the ongoing Israeli attacks since last October 8, in the wake of the war on the Gaza Strip.
Bou Habib’s statements came while he received the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Kate Forbes, in his office in the capital, Beirut, noting that she arrived in Lebanon yesterday, Sunday, for a two-day visit, according to a statement issued by the Lebanese Foreign Ministry.
Bou Habib stressed that the displaced people from southern Lebanon as a result of “recent events and Israeli attacks are in dire need of care and assistance.” He pointed out that any possible assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross is “welcome.”
Fear in Lebanon of a broader war
In light of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the towns of southern Lebanon bordering occupied Palestine are being targeted by the occupation forces, which Hezbollah is responding to by bombing Israeli sites. The Israeli bombing led to the emptying of towns of their residents, the destruction of many homes, and the burning of orchards and forests, in addition to the fall of dozens of martyrs and wounded.
Since October 8, 30 civilian martyrs have fallen on the Lebanese side of the border, including three journalists and three children, in addition to 182 Hezbollah members and leaders and one soldier in the Lebanese army.
There are great fears surrounding these armed clashes, which have continued for the 121st day, that they will expand and turn into a broader war similar to the July 2006 Israeli aggression against Lebanon, which is still fresh in the memory of the Lebanese. In this context, the Lebanese government has been preparing, since last October, to prepare comprehensive plans at the ministries level in the event that the clashes expand.
It is noteworthy that the Israeli occupation forces have been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, causing massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, according to the United Nations. Today, Monday, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that the toll of the Israeli war on the Strip had risen to 27,478 martyrs and 66,835 wounded, most of whom were children and women, noting that there are more than seven thousand missing.
