Brussels. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, assured on Thursday that some 10,000 North Korean soldiers are being prepared to join Russian troops and fight on Ukrainian territory.
“We know that they are preparing around 10,000 North Korean soldiers to send them to fight against us,” Zelensky told EU leaders, to whom he presented his “plan for victory” against Russia.
Zelensky said that these are “ground forces” and technical personnel.
According to Zelensky, Russian President Vladimir Putin “tries to involve other participants in this war” because of the “serious losses” suffered by his army.
Furthermore, he said, Putin fears a mobilization of troops in his country, “which would be very unpopular.”
Zelensky assured that he has information “from the Ukrainian intelligence services” according to which North Korean officers would already be in Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia.
The Ukrainian president had already stated on October 13 that North Korea was providing soldiers to the Russian army, although he had not mentioned numbers.
A Ukrainian media outlet recently claimed that six North Korean officers were killed during a Ukrainian missile attack near Donetsk, in the east of the country.
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, for his part, stated that Seoul considered it “very likely that there have been casualties among North Korean officers and soldiers in Ukraine.”
For its part, the Russian government denied this information.
