The Chinese battery giant CATL will start production of a car battery that will allow a driving range of 1,000 kilometers next year. Until now, the maximum is around 700 kilometers.

CATL is the largest battery producer in the world and has automakers such as Tesla and Mercedes-Benz among its battery cell customers. The company has presented a new generation of its lithium-ion batteries, which are used in many electric cars.

The new Qilin battery delivers a maximum driving range of 1,000 kilometers, according to CATL. It also turns out not to be much larger than the current generation of batteries, because the group has succeeded in making 70 percent of the battery’s size consist of functioning battery material. With current batteries, about half of the battery pack consists of packaging, cabling and security material.

Production of the new car batteries will start next year. Nothing is known about the price yet. Two Chinese automakers, Li Auto and Hozon, have yet to sign contracts to purchase the super battery.

At the moment, the maximum autonomy of electric cars is just over 700 kilometers. The electric flagship of Mercedes-Benz, the EQS, can travel 770 kilometers – with a battery from CATL.

The range of a battery is one of the most important elements when evaluating an electric car. It also determines the extent to which people suffer from ‘range anxiety’: the fear of coming to a standstill on the road with an empty battery.
