100 zlotys for an hour of work in Geneva. The highest minimum wage in the world

The equivalent of nearly PLN 100 – this is the minimum wage for an hour of work in Swiss Geneva. This is probably the highest lowest hourly wage in the world, according to CNN.

During the referendum in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland, it was decided that the lowest wage per hour would be 23 Swiss francs (over PLN 96). Over 58 percent of the referendum participants voted in favor of this solution. Let us recall that Switzerland is a federation of 26 cantons, where the institution of direct democracy is widely used – the referendum.

There is no general minimum wage law in Switzerland. Apart from Geneva, it was introduced by three other cantons: Neuchatel, Jura and Ticino.

As argued by the initiators of setting a minimum hourly wage of 23 Swiss francs, the aim was “to fight poverty, promote social integration and contribute to respect for human dignity.”

“The new minimum wage will apply to six percent of employees in the canton,” Mauro Poggia, member of the Geneva council, told CNN.

According to data from the Geneva trade unions, the passed legislation will affect around 30,000 workers, of which around 20,000 are women.

CNN also cites an opinion by the council of the Geneva canton that was against such a high minimum wage. Councilors recognized her as “the highest in the world”. At the same time, it is worth recalling that Geneva is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world.
