Salzburg “Jeeedermaaann” – the calls that suddenly tear the “rich man” out of a self-satisfied party mood and remind him of the near end, are part of the inalienable part of the Salzburg Festival. Strictly speaking, the world’s largest music and theater festival would not even exist without the long-running hit since 1920, i.e. for exactly 100 years, penned by festival co-founder Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The anniversary is to be duly celebrated this Saturday (August 22nd) in Salzburg with a “Jedermann” day and an evening gala performance with Tobias Moretti in the title role. There are also former men and women like Klaus Maria Brandauer, Cornelius Obonya and Peter Simonischek.

At the festival premiere two years after the end of the First World War, the director Max Reinhardt staged the play for the first time on Domplatz. Since then, with the exception of the years 1922 to 1926 and the period from 1937 to 1945, when Hofmannsthal’s works were not allowed to be performed under the Nazis, it has been performed every summer and has become the festival’s trademark. “Jedermann” premiered in 1911 in Berlin. Hofmannsthal had written his successful piece in the style of an old English mystery play in seemingly historical Knittel verse. The poet wanted the revival of this archaic dramatic form, equipped with allegorical figures such as the mammon or faith, to be understood as a renewal of the theater from the spirit of the past. Until 2002 “Jedermann” was staged in Salzburg according to Reinhardt’s specifications. Christian Stückl set modern accents. Michael Sturminger’s 2017 staging, which was also played this year, is the most radical to date.
