Nine cantons of Ecuador reached 100% of the vaccination against covid-19. The inhabitants of these cities have applied the complete scheme of immunization, that is, one or two doses, depending on the provider.

The cantons that reached this percentage are Sight (Carchi); Penipe (Chimborazo); Chilla, The slabs and Portovelo (Gold); Samborondón (Guayas); Jaramijó (Manabi); Aguarico (Orellana); and Cevallos (Tungurahua).
Reaching high percentages in vaccination against covid-19 is important, since it will reach the herd immunity. The largest number of residents inoculated against the disease is known by this term.
Initially, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that the percentage of vaccinated be 85%. However, due to the circulation of the new variants (Delta, Alpha and Gamma), the figure increased to more than 95%.
Daniel Simancas, epidemiologist at UTE University, explained that it is important to achieve high percentages of vaccination against covid-19. Therefore, local governments they must bet on immunization campaigns to reach more citizens.
“Let us remember that there is a high number of people who have not yet applied the second dose, that is, they have not completed their scheme, so they are more prone to the disease. For this reason, the inoculation must be strengthened so that there are no regrowths ”.
Fabricio González, a doctor and university professor, agrees that if citizens do not complete their dose they will have less than 50% immunity. This means that the risks of becoming seriously ill or dying are higher.
In this sense, González assures that vaccination “is not everything”, that is, it is necessary to maintain the biosecurity measures. Among them are the constant washing of hands, the correct use of the mask and the distancing. In addition, the control of the gauging and the ventilation of closed places.
