The 100 percent tariffs on the import of Chinese electric vehicles that the Joe Biden government announced a few months ago to strengthen the US national industry will come into force on September 27the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) reported on Friday.
Also coming into force on that date are: 50 percent tariffs on solar panels and 25 percent to other materials or products such as aluminum, electric batteries and steel.
Meanwhile, the 50 percent tariffs on Chinese semiconductors will not begin until next year, with no date yet set.
The imposition of these tariffs was announced last May, when a period was opened for comments to be submitted on the proposal to raise tariffs “for certain products from China in strategic sectors”.
In total, tariffs will be increased on products that accounted for trade valued at 18 billion dollars in 2023.
The USTR The US Food and Drug Administration announced final changes to the regulatory review of tariff measures on Friday after reviewing 1,100 public comments, the agency said in a statement.
“The finalized tariff increases will target China’s harmful policies and practices that continue to hurt American workers and businesses,” said Trade Representative Katherine Tai.
According to the USTR, despite complaints and calls from the United States, China has not eliminated many of its laws, policies and practices related to the transfer of technology, which “continue to impose a burden or restriction on U.S. trade”.
“Rather than pursuing fundamental reform, China has persisted, and in some cases become more aggressive, including through cyber intrusions and cyber theft, in its attempts to acquire and absorb foreign technology, which further burdens or restricts U.S. commerce,” the statement said.
