In Vienna-Liesing, the Viennese professional fire brigade fought a “very extensive roof fire” in the early hours of Wednesday, as fire brigade spokesman Christian Feiler reported.
The forces moved out “with 25 vehicles and 100 men”. 35 people from the building on Ketzergasse were evacuated and handed over to the Vienna professional rescue service. One person (64) suffered mild smoke intoxication.

The fire department received the alarm shortly before 5 a.m. “At first it was called a room fire, but it was a balcony fire,” said Feiler. “While extinguishing the fire, the operations manager noticed that parts of the roof were already affected. Therefore, the alarm level was increased to 3.”
The fire brigade attacked the flames using turntable ladders and laying several extinguishing lines. The roof was then opened with chainsaws in order to carry out subsequent extinguishing work.
The 64-year-old was taken to a hospital after initial treatment, said a spokesman for the Vienna professional rescue service. “We looked after a total of 35 people in the special operations group buses.” The paramedics were on the scene for almost five hours.
