Tuesday, June 2, 2021 marks the centenary of the robot explorer Perseverance belong NASA is at Mars. What has Perserverance been doing for 100 days on the Red Planet?
To note, Perseverance landed in Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021, after traveling for 203 days across a distance of 293 million miles. The most advanced space exploration robot also brought with it the Ingenuity helicopter, which made history as the first flight made on another planet.
As quoted from Fox News, scientists noted, during the 100 days since his arrival in Mars, Perseverance and Ingenuity have done at least the following six things:
– Tested all cameras and instruments
– Submitted 75 thousand more pictures
– Take Ingenuity helicopter flights and document them
– Record sound on Mars
– Extracting oxygen from the atmosphere
– Starting the first exploration zone
The Perseverance mission, led by members of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has begun its journey to conduct astrobiological research, one of which includes the search for ancient microbial life.
There’s still a lot of work to do Perseverance, among others continue the task of characterizing climate and geology as well as collecting and storing rocks and sediments Mars. All of these achievements will later be very important for human exploration of the planet.
