The “Last Generation” initiative has blocked access to the government district in Berlin. The police are on duty. There could be further disruptions in the urban area. The traffic information center even advises against driving.

Climate protection demonstrators blocked several access roads to the government district in Berlin-Mitte on Friday afternoon. This was announced by the “Last Generation” initiative. The atmosphere on site is “relatively calm”, reported an rbb reporter. Traffic jams only formed occasionally – for the most part, traffic continued without problems.

The police intervened immediately after the start of the protest action and cleared the streets – including Ebertstrasse directly in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The emergency services also intervened quickly on the corner of Schiffbauerdamm and Reinhardtstrasse. Around 25 activists settled there.

The initiative stated that 100 demonstrators were taking part in the action. The police could not immediately confirm this.

Traffic information center warns on Twitter

The activists had them Road blockades in Berlin announced in advance. The group spoke of “massive” actions in a variety of streets. The occasion is the 100th day of the new federal government, which continues to rely on oil, gas and coal instead of climate protection.

The Berlin Traffic Information Center (VIZ) warned on Twitter that there could be traffic disruptions throughout the city. She advised using public transport or bicycles because it was not clear in advance where the initiative would become active.

Motorways, airports and ports have already been blocked

Under the slogan “Save food – save lives”, the climate activists have blocked motorways in Berlin and other cities in recent weeks, airports and ports. Some of the participants stuck to the ground. Long traffic jams often formed. At the beginning of March, the actions because of the war in Ukraine were stopped for the time being.

The blockades in Berlin led to more than 270 criminal charges and around 120 charges of administrative offenses. The allegations were mainly coercion in road traffic, resistance to police officers and dangerous intervention in road traffic.

The initiative calls for the federal government to introduce a “Save Food Act” as a step towards the necessary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. Large supermarkets should therefore be obliged to donate food that is still edible. The blockades are intended to make it clear “that the citizens are watching the government closely and that resistance is growing with further government failures,” it said.
