10 years in prison for embezzlement of 11.5 billion won

Used to pay off stocks and debt… Ordered to collect remaining embezzlement amount of 7.7 billion won

A 10-year prison sentence has been confirmed for a 7th grade civil servant at Gangdong-gu Office in Seoul who embezzled 11.5 billion won of public funds.

The second division of the Supreme Court (presiding judge Jae-yeon Cho) dismissed the appeal of Mr. Kim (48), who was charged with embezzlement and forgery and exercise of official documents under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, and confirmed the original judgment on the 2nd.

The order to collect 7.69 billion won was also maintained.

From December 2019 to February 2021, Mr. Kim was accused of stealing 11.5 billion won from the Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH) deposited to the Gangdong-gu Office and using it for stock investment and debt repayment.

He returned 3.8 billion won of the embezzlement, but it was investigated that most of the remaining money was lost during stock investment.

The first trial sentenced him to 10 years in prison, saying, “The quality of the crime is very bad, such as embezzling about 11.5 billion won of public money by using the business authority in charge and forging a number of official documents to cover it up.”

The second trial also made the same judgment as the first trial, saying, “Even considering the fact that he admitted the crime and cooperated with the investigation, it seems difficult to change the sentence.”
