Dogs break into the ice, girl jumps behind
When the family dogs fall into a frozen pond, Ma’Liyah White doesn’t hesitate for a second: the ten-year-old runs onto the ice to save the animals. But the girl breaks in too. Her foster father Carlos Serafin (31) follows, as the girl’s aunt Amanda Beals tells the “Daily Mail”. He dies during the rescue attempt, Ma’Liyah fights for her life badly injured.
Accident while walking in Illinois
Carlos Serafin and Bill Croy (47) have been married for six years and are the foster parents of Ma’Liyah White and her sister Bailey (8). On Saturday morning, the family takes their three dogs for a walk in Charleston, Illinois. It is 8 o’clock in the morning when the accident happens.
Ten minutes after Ma’Liyah and her foster father jumped into the pond, first responders arrived at the scene of the accident, according to the local fire department. Rescuers in wetsuits jump into the water and search for the missing. “The first victim was pulled from the water at 8:06 a.m. and the second at 8:15 a.m.,” the statement said. The rescuers also pull the three dogs out of the pond, one animal dies.
A small sign of hope for a seriously injured child
Carlos Serafin is pronounced dead in hospital; the doctors there are fighting for Ma’Liyah’s life. Her aunt told the Daily Mail that her brain had shown no activity. But she hopes the ten-year-old recovers: The ten-year-old’s lungs showed slight signs of improvement.
“She’s a strong little girl,” Beals said on Facebook. “When we told her we loved her, she moved her head a bit. We hope that’s a good sign.”
Ma’Liyah’s aunt calls for donations for Illinois family
Beals told the Daily Mail about Carlos Serafin: “Everybody should know that Carlos died a hero. He was always very spontaneous and never thought twice. Right up to his last breath when he wanted to save Ma’Liyah’s life. He loved his girls and the dogs so much.”
Because Serafin didn’t have life insurance, Amanda Beals asked for donations for the family on the “Gofundme” platform. She wants to use the money to pay for the 31-year-old’s funeral and Ma’Liyah’s treatment. (bst)
