Currently, 195 states are part of UNESCO whose objective is to guide these nations to take advantage of both natural resources and their cultural values.
In 1972, Unesco created the World Heritage Convention that links the concepts of nature conservation and preservation of cultural heritage, those that due to their exceptional universal value deserve special protection against the dangers they face. The World Heritage Committee periodically reviews the criteria to reflect the evolution of the concept of World Heritage itself. The list is also constantly updated with new sites, separated into categories: cultural heritage, natural heritage, and mixed heritage.
