10 Types of Contraceptives, Not Just Condoms

Baby is considered a sustenance that should not be rejected. However, couples still have the option of planning, including by contraception. The following are the types of contraception according to the BKKBN along with the advantages and disadvantages of contraception.

Contraception is a method or method of preventing pregnancy. There are various types of contraception that can be tailored to the needs and conditions.

If viewed broadly, contraception can be divided into hormonal contraceptives, physical barriers, natural, as well as period.

Hormonal contraceptives

1. Pil KB

One type of hormonal contraception is the consumption of pills that contain a combination of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. In Indonesia, people usually call it the Pill KB (Family Planning).

The pill makes cervical mucus thicker so it doesn’t allow sperm to stick to the egg.

Plus, minimal side effects, does not interfere with milk production. Failure is about 7 percent.

3. KB injection

Injectable contraceptives are also one of the types of contraception according to the BKKBN. The following are the advantages and disadvantages of injectable contraceptives.

According to the website of the Department of Population Control, Family Planning, Community and Village Empowerment (DPPKBPMD) Bantul Regency, the injection method of KB means injecting the hormone progestin into the bloodstream to stop ovulation. There are two types of injections, namely, 3-month and 1-month birth control injections.

Plus, it’s more practical and effective than birth control pills with a failure rate of 4 percent. Even the failure of a 1-month birth control injection can be less than 1 percent.

Minus, the price is relatively expensive, requires a visit to the doctor, does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), irregular menstrual cycles, not recommended for women with a history of migraine, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, stroke, heart attack.

4. Intrauterine Device (IUD) hormonal

The IUD is a contraceptive device with a shape resembling the letter T made of plastic. This device is placed in the uterus and works by blocking sperm from fertilizing an egg.

There are two IUDs, namely the copper IUD (nonhormonal) and the hormonal IUD. The difference is, the nonhormonal IUD can last up to 10 years, while the hormonal IUD needs to be replaced every 5 years.

Plus, the treatment is uncomplicated and durable.

Minus, the risk of shifting and out of place, expensive costs and the risk of side effects in the form of blood spots in the first 3-6 months of use.
