Several of the biggest releases in 2023 feature some pretty recognizable voice actors and dubbing stars. Matt Mercer is one of them, but you also recognize the calm voice of Cissy Jones, Joyce Price in Life is Strange, Delilah in Firewatch and more recently Adreja, a member of Constellation and one of the most popular and backstory-driven companions in Starfield.
The film, TV and especially video game voice was one of the keynote speakers at the recent BIG conference and was kind enough to grant us an interview which you can watch in subtitled version below.
In the interview, Jones talked about her work as a voice actor and the future of her profession now that AI is entering the industry at full speed, but she also revealed some interesting details about the development of Starfield and what it was like to play Andreja in Bethesda’s giant space epic.
To begin with, Cissy Jones was originally hired to record the voices of the main cast of Starfield, a decision that was later changed by Bethesda in favor of a mute lead actress. “I first auditioned for the role in 2016 and was hired in 2018. And then I first recorded to be the main character, not Andreja. We recorded 30-40 hours of voiceover main character and then they decided it wasn’t right to have a main character with a voice.”
“So they cut all that out and said we’re going to give you the partner role, which doesn’t usually happen in video games. Usually if you lose the role that’s out, you’re out, goodbye and good luck. But Bethesda has been so nice to work with, and both the male lead and myself were cast as companions.”
Cissy Jones also tells that she has spent five years recording lines for her character, and has come to know her as a part of herself, which she also experienced in a slightly strange way during the recording of Andreja’s romantic scenes and sex scenes.
“It’s kind of weird. Those sessions were really weird. But it’s, you know, I love that the games now continue at that level of realism, that you can get so much into a story, because if you spend that much time with somebody , a romantic connection is usually likely to occur. So why not see what it can lead to in-game?”.
