Are there enough statues honoring women in our big cities in general and New York in particular? For Australian artist couple Gillie and Marc Schattner, the answer is clearly no. “If you walk the streets of New York and admire the 150 statues scattered around the city, you will find that only 5 of them are dedicated to women, or 3.3%: Joan of Arc, the Prime Minister Israeli Golda Meir, poet Gertrude Stein, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and African-American activist Harriet Tubman, ”the artists lament. The Statue of Liberty being an idealized figure unrelated to a real woman, it is not mentioned … And the artists ask a question: “Have women really made a significant contribution to society?” “. “Of course it does, but you won’t realize it when you see the marginalization of women in public art,” continues Gillie Schattner.
From Nicole Kidman to Oprah Winfrey
The couple therefore decided to make their contribution to the feminist movement by launching a project called “Statue for Equality”. The idea: to present 10 statues of women in the heart of New York, on 6th Avenue, a stone’s throw from Rockefeller Center. Who are the 10 women chosen? TV hosts Oprah Winfrey and Janet Mock, singer Pink, actresses Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, Zimbabwean-American doctor Tererai Trent, astronaut Tracy Dyson, novelist Cheryl Strayed, gymnast Gabby Douglas and British anthropologist Jane Goodall, the only non-American woman honored.
New statues in preparation
Gillie and Marc Schattner now hope to expand the project and create new statues. And everyone is invited to propose names of women to be distinguished, via the site statuesforequality.com. Going through the list, Beyoncé, Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga got a head start! “Our goal is for a large city in every state of the United States to erect a statue of a woman of influence in the next 5 years,” say Gillie and Marc Schattner. What will become of the statues installed in New York? The exhibition is expected to remain temporary and the statues are open for sale. The price ? 100,000 dollars per statue.
