10 Osteoporosis Risk Factors You Need to Know

Merdeka.com – The lifestyle that is owned by a number of people is the cause of the emergence of osteoporosis. But apart from that, there are a number of other risk factors that make these health problems vulnerable.

Osteoporosis is a disease when bones lose density and eventually become brittle. So even light pressure, such as bending over or coughing, can cause fractures.

According to a clinical nutrition specialist, Dr. Dr. Luciana B Sutanto, there are at least 10 risk factors for osteoporosis.

These risk factors are:

-Body mass index (BMI) below or equal to 19.

-People with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

-Lifestyle such as smoking, consuming alcoholic beverages, and excessive fizzy.

“The nicotine in cigarettes causes calcium reabsorption in the kidneys. Smoking causes the hormone estrogen (a reproductive hormone that maintains bone health) to decrease in the body,” said Luci some time ago.

He also said that the toxic effect of smoking slows the formation of new bone cells (osteoblasts) by inhibiting the work of the hormone calcitonin which is related to calcium in the blood.

In addition, drinking more than two units of alcoholic beverage per day can increase the risk of osteoporosis and hip fracture in both men and women. Moderate, caffeine and soda have the potential to reduce the absorption of calcium in the body.

Genetics and Health Issues

– Parental History

-History of parents who have had a hip fracture or have osteoporosis.

-Asian or Caucasian ethnicity.

Smaller body size causes reduced levels of bone mass which have an impact on bone density with age.

Malabsorption is the inability of the intestines to absorb nutrients in food as in celiac disease and Crohn’s disease.
