At a press conference, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stressed that the city will not tolerate any type of discrimination against the Asian-American community.
This reflection was made regarding the beginning of the lunar new year.
Regarding the vaccination efforts, he highlighted that last week 317,227 doses were administered and in one day 55,339 inhabitants were inoculated.
He reiterated that with the appropriate supply, the city has the capacity to vaccinate half a million people weekly.
He highlighted that the total doses administered so far is 1,336,382; which means that at least 10% of adults in NYC have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
He announced that a couple of new vaccination sites will open at:
- Teachers Prep High School, effective 2/17 and will give priority to the communities of Brownsville and East New York, in Brooklyn.
- Empire Outlets, effective 2/18, exclusively for Staten Island residents.
In relation to his plan to vaccinate the elderly living at home, de Blasio unveiled a three-part plan:
- Vaccination at home using the Johnson & Johnson company single dose.
- Vaccination clinics in retirement centers.
- Inoculate about 25,000 home helpers in a month.
Regarding the new indicators used to measure progress in the fight against coronavirus, the most recent data showed:
- Number of positive cases admitted to hospitals: 213 (62%)
- Number of hospitalizations per 100,000 population, 7-day median (NYS): 4.73
- COVID-19 reported cases, 7-day average: 3,668
- Percentage of patients who tested positive, 7-day average: 7.07%
