Just as the Earth orbits the sun, the solar system orbits the center of the Milky Way. Despite moving through space at a speed of about 828,000 km per hour, our solar system takes about 250 million years to complete one rotation around the center of the galaxy.
If the center of the Milky Way were a city, we would live on the outskirts of the city, about 25,000 to 30,000 light years from the city center. We are in one of the smaller spheres, namely the Orion-Cygnus Arm, which is surrounded by the larger Perseus and Carina-Sagittarius Arms. If we move towards the city center, we will find the Scutum-Centaurus Arm and Norma.
