(ANSA) – ROME, NOV 23 – The World Day for the Rights of Children and Adolescents is celebrated every year on 20 November and the Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police has produced a report on minor victims of abuse’, analysis of the forms of crime that most affected minors, both in the two-year period 2022-2023 and in the period 1 January – 30 June 2024, compared with the similar period of the previous year. Among the data, it emerges that in the last six months there has been a 10% increase in crimes committed, compared to the same period last year. The crimes analyzed are the abandonment of minors or incapable persons, the abuse of means of correction or discipline, the solicitation of minors, sexual acts with minors, mistreatment of family members and cohabitants, minor pornography, the theft of incapable people, violation of family care obligations, various cases relating to sexual violence. In particular, an overall increase of 10% in crimes committed emerged in the first half of the current year compared to the same period last year. In detail, we note an increase respectively of 22% in the abuse of means of correction or discipline, of 15% in mistreatment against family members and cohabitants and in the abduction of incompetent people, a decrease of 16% respectively in the solicitation of minors, 17% of violations of family care obligations, and 24% of sexual violence aggravated because it was committed in educational institutions. In the same period of time, minor victims under the age of 18 are increasing due to the cases of abandonment of minors or incapable persons (+12%), abuse of correctional or disciplinary means (+11%) and child pornography (+ 83%). It is important to point out that, among the victims of crimes of a sexual nature, those of the female gender predominate. However, for crimes of abandonment of minors or incapable persons, abuse of means of correction or discipline and violation of family care obligations, male victims are predominant. Also in the first half of 2024, reports against alleged known perpetrators, mostly male, mainly relate to the age group between 35 and 64 (60%). The Report then develops an in-depth analysis of the so-called “virtual world frontier”, also achieved thanks to the contribution provided by the Postal Police and Cyber Security Service. In the two-year period 2022-2023, there was a decrease in cases of online solicitation and cyberbullying and an increase in cases of sextortion. In the same period, although revenge porn, i.e. the illicit diffusion of sexually explicit images or videos, was also increasing overall, the number of minor victims was reduced by 8%. A particular reflection must be made on the high number of victims under the age of 14, which further highlights the seriousness of a worrying phenomenon, also due to the consequences of the psycho-physical development of the victims.
