The history of the bikini
In 1946, the mechanical engineer Louis Réard created the bikini, a garment that today is essential for women during the summer and the beach. Those little pieces of cloth turn 75 years old and every July 5 their day is commemorated.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when women went on vacation to the sea or went to a pool, they wore one-piece swimsuits and looked like a short dress, which did not fit the body and was discreet.
Over the years this garment began to be tighter. In the 40s, when the boom to highlight the female figure began, two-piece suits emerged, but still without showing much skin.
Louis Réard, a mechanical engineer who started out in his mother’s lingerie business, dared to fix the problem women had with bathing suits.
Upon meeting her clientele, she developed a bikini prototype that stayed on her desk for a while, as she could not find someone who wanted and dared to model it.
On July 5, 1946, her guardian angel and hope named Micheline Bernardini, a French actress and former stripper, showed her creation to the world and became the first woman to wear a bikini.
After its launch, it took a while to be accepted by the world, because it taught too much. However, in our days it is already common to see it in all colors, shapes and sizes.
