10 Essential Superhero Movies: Debunking the Myth That They’re Not Good Cinema

There is a debate about whether certain genres don’t count as good films or whether popular genres are destroying cinema. Yesterday I offered my selection of 10 film adaptations of non-superhero comics that are good cinema, as a counterpoint to the accusations. Today I continue my look at comic book and superhero cinema with a list of 10 essential superhero movies that are good cinema.

As I explained in a previous article, I strongly disagree with anyone who tries to denounce a genre of film and claim that those films are responsible for damaging the art and the industry, and I think it is even more important to reject it if the accusation is that the films Action films from the 80s are stupid and not real cinema, or crime and gangster action thrillers from the 1990s are made and copied endlessly to the point of driving other films out of theaters and eating up too much of the financing.

Whatever the target of the current “they don’t make them like they used to” trend, they are always wrong. But rather than endlessly repeating the same obvious points and defenses of art and film, I will offer examples from the films in question and let them speak for themselves. Anyone who wants to argue that these are not actually real movies and that they are guilty of participating in the ruin of cinema can voice that in the comments below, and other readers can compare the movies to the accusations. I am confident which one will win in that head-to-head exam.

This list was specifically selected to represent movies that stand out from what you might consider typical superhero movies, and to disprove the idea that superhero movies are pat or lack real characters and serious drama. And I also want to demonstrate the diversity of approaches and narratives within the genre, so instead of, for example, putting everything the dark knight trilogy in the list, I chose one example and used the extra spaces for more movies.

I think the type of people who might agree more with those accusations would find it difficult to say publicly that these films are not real films and that they are guilty of helping to destroy real cinema; I repeat, I do not want to debate the issue further, I simply want those statements to coincide with these films.

Lastly, I limited myself to theatrical releases, and only to the original version of those films, not special editions or extended cuts, to make it simpler and less likely to open up avenues of tangential arguments and debates.

So here, in random order, are 10 essential superhero movies that represent good cinema, and rest assured, there are plenty more where they came from…

The dark knight

Joker

Black Panther

Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse

Unbreakable

Hellboy

Super

Wonder Woman

Logan

The Incredibles

Honorable mention, of course, for Batman Begins, The legend is reborn, Avengers: Infinity War, Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut y Superman: The Movie which I excluded for various reasons (mainly technicalities).

Again, I curated the list to avoid repetition and offer broader examples of what the genre is capable of, and to specifically avoid films that are more overtly and inherently unappealing to those who don’t like the genre, so not There are Avengers or Justice League movies. That said, a list of highly “superhero” superhero films still features many good examples that hold their own against any accusations of a lack of legitimacy as art and as cinema. For example, Avengers: Infinity War, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Batman Returns, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man, Watchmen, Blade II, The Rocketeer y Superman: The Movie They would be a difficult list to discard.

By the way, let us remember that Joker was a film project originally backed and produced by Martin Scorsese. So he would be legitimately interested in his opinion on whether Joker is not a real movie or if it contributed to destroying real cinema. I guess I would say “no, that’s not what I mean” to both questions; but within that likely reaction would be the seed of everything I’m trying to say about why blanket statements and condemnations are unfair and harmful to other filmmakers, and also to an entire film and literary genre.

All of this makes one wonder if perhaps the real problem is that, at any given time in film history, the most popular genres of the time will also inherently have many imitators and low-cost knock-offs trying to cash in. And if this also means a decrease in the quality of many of those films in general, due to rushed productions that can result in flawed and downright bad productions. And perhaps a call to support stricter guidelines for studio spending and productions, to avoid this recurring trend and free up more spending for a greater number and more diverse variety of films, regardless of what the current trend is at any given time. given. It could be a more accurate and sustainable rallying cry that garners broader agreement, even among comic book movie advocates.

Once again, I hope you find some new movies to watch and enjoy on this list, and that you think about these movies and whether they are really movies, whether they have strong characters and legitimate emotional arcs and themes, and whether they tell stories that you think about afterward. . I hope your answers are “yes” and that you find a new recognition of this genre as true art in both film and literature.
