10 Early Signs of Kidney Disease to Watch For – WebMD

Jakarta

Kidneys are one of the most important organs for maintaining body balance. The main job of the kidneys is to remove waste from the blood and return cleansed blood to the body.

If the kidneys do not function properly, this will lead to various health problems and complications. As a result, kidney disease will be difficult to treat if the condition is severe.

Therefore, it is important to prevent and treat kidney disease as early as possible. One way is to be aware of some of the early signs of kidney problems which are often ignored.

Quoted from WebMD, here are 10 signs of kidney problems to watch out for.

1. Always tired

The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it through urine. When the kidneys don’t work well, toxins can build up. One common sign is fatigue.

A person may feel tired, weak, or have difficulty concentrating. The kidneys produce hormones that tell the body to make red blood cells. If the number of red blood cells is low, the blood cannot deliver as much oxygen to the muscles and brain as needed.

2. Poor sleep quality

Research shows a possible link between sleep apnea and chronic kidney disease, which over time damages the body’s organs and can lead to kidney failure.

Sleep apnea can damage a person’s kidneys by preventing the body from getting enough oxygen. Chronic kidney disease can then cause sleep apnea by narrowing the throat, toxin buildup, and other ways.

3. Itchy skin

Itchy skin can occur if the kidneys cannot remove toxins so they accumulate in the blood. This can cause a rash or make a person feel itchy.

Over time, the kidneys may be unable to balance minerals and nutrients in the body. As a result, this condition can cause mineral and bone disease, which can make your skin dry and itchy.

4. Swelling on the face and legs

When the kidneys cannot remove sodium properly, fluid will build up in the body. This can cause swollen hands, feet, ankles, legs, or face.

A person may feel swelling, especially in the feet and ankles. In addition, protein excreted in urine can appear as swelling around the eyes.

5. Muscle cramps

Cramps in the legs and other parts of the body can be a sign of poor kidney function. The reason is, an imbalance in levels of sodium, calcium, potassium or other electrolytes can interfere with the work of muscles and nerves.

6. Shortness of breath

When someone suffers from kidney disease, their body organs do not produce enough erythropoietin hormone. This hormone signals the body to make red blood cells.

Without this hormone, a person can experience anemia and feel short of breath. Another cause is fluid buildup. A person may have difficulty catching their breath. In serious cases, lying down can make the body feel like it is drowning.

7. Foggy Head

When the kidneys do not filter all waste from the body, these toxins can affect the brain. Anemia can also deprive the brain of the oxygen supply it needs.

A person may feel dizzy and experience problems with concentration and memory. He may become so confused that he has difficulty performing simple tasks.

8. Low appetite

Kidney disease can cause nausea or vomiting and make the stomach hurt which can make a person have no appetite. This can sometimes lead to weight loss.

9. Bad breath

When the kidneys cannot filter waste, this can lead to a condition called uremia. This condition can make a person’s mouth smell. Additionally, toxins in the bloodstream can make food taste metallic or unpleasant.

10. Foamy, brownish or bloody urine

Foamy urine may be a sign of too much of a protein called albumin. This can be caused by kidney problems. Likewise with urine that is brownish or very pale.

Impaired kidney function can also cause blood to leak into the bladder.

Blood in urine can also be caused by kidney stones, tumors, or infections.
