10 couples before art

Beyond everything, the poetic work, the study of history, the plastic work, the investigation, the mural or the cinema, the screenplay, the novel or the writing, in the 10 stories of creative couples collected in the book Intimacy . Beyond Love: Meetings with Couples of Mexican Art and Culture, recently published by Adriana Malvido with photographs by Christa Cowrie, there are lovers who share creation.

“Christa Cowrie sought me out and proposed me the project: exploring how creativity worked in pairs”, says Malvido, who between book and book, from The Red Queen to Los Náufragos, between the works of José Clemente Orozco and Nahui Olin, took the time to collect interviews with more than 40 pairs of art, literature, academia, science and the popular world, to select the 10 that make up this book that Parallel 21 has published and which will be presented tomorrow at 16:00: 30 hours at Porrúa bookshop in Chapultepec.

“It’s a very thoughtful project,” says the editorialist of EL UNIVERSAL, a project that brings together voices that, far from aging, have acquired a lot of value over time, even though many of them have died.

Malvido and Cowrie entered the intimacy of Bárbara Jacobs and Vicente Rojo, Ascensión Hernández Triviño and Miguel León-Portilla, Paz Alicia Garciadiego and Arturo Ripstein, Carla Hernández and Rafael Cauduro, Elva Macías and Eraclio Zepeda, Sara Assínezad and Carlos Martíad by Rina Lazo and Arturo García Bustos, by Margarita de Orellana and Alberto Ruy Sánchez, by Ángeles Mastretta and Héctor Aguilar Camín, and by Jesusa Rodríguez and Liliana Felipe: 10 creative intimacies.

There are 10 universes that allow us to see their intimacy in the face of the reality of a country and the complicated ways of making art and creating in Mexico. “They show us the complexity of the context in which it is created in this country; Ripstein is a very important example, he is a great creator, but you see the work it takes to make each film, because they have fun and suffer together. But there are other cases, Carla Hernández realizes Cauduro’s talent and becomes sympathetic so that he believes, but then she gets involved and paints with him on the Supreme Court mural. They divorced, but they continue to paint together, ”says Malvido.

He assures that in couples there is a very complex issue: mutual recognition as an artist, “is very complex and difficult, but very interesting. And the wonder is that they will tell us “.

These are the stories of 10 couples who have lived a life together creating and accompanying each other. “I don’t want to close my eyes to what happens in our reality, but I’m interested in saying that this also happens, that this is as true as the dead, that these living stories and these rich voices are also given to us by this country.”

And even if they are different there are encounters. “Suddenly it is almost subversive to remove one of these books because in the general discourse they are telling us, that of hatred, that of all aggression, verbal violence, polarization … Jesusa Rodríguez and Liliana Felipe can live here with Héctor Aguilar Camín and Angeles Mastretta, here is a meeting point in the life of a couple and in the creative life. They can coexist without crumbling as seen so much on networks. I didn’t do it on purpose, I selected the stories, but after reading them I said: ‘they coexist very well’ ”, she says.
