“Riga Photography Biennial – NEXT 2023”
From April 27 to July 23, the Riga Photography Biennale program “NEXT” awaits the audience, which will consist of eight exhibitions and also educational events. The focus of the 2023 program is on the “uncomfortable” topics that are often avoided or chosen to remain silent because they could cause strong emotions and disagreements.

Riga Photo Month
From May 1 to 31, the photography and art festival “Rīgas Fotomēnenis” will take place. This time it will be opened with a project dedicated to the image created by artificial intelligence and its vision of Latvia. The main venue of the festival will be the gallery created especially for this event at 64 Gertrudes street. Exhibitions can be viewed every day from 2 to 8 p.m., admission is free. The book “Artificial Intelligence Latvia” will also be published at the festival.

The dark arts of gloomy girls
From May 2 to 13, in the program of the Sculpture Quadrennial, the cycle of events “Dark Arts of Dark Girls” will be held in the quarter of Tallinn Street, offering a program of visual art, music, poetry and prose with a focus on the current practice of Latvian women artists. Participants are Laimdota Malle, Brenda Jansone, Elīna Semane, Simona Ķivite, Kristiāna Kārkliņa, Sarma Gabrēna, Ieva Stalšene, Ieva Melgalve, Ilya, Santa Hirša.

Andrei Osokina Freedom Festival
From May 7 to June 11, the fourth Freedom Festival of pianist Andrei Osokina will take place in Riga, which will be dedicated to Ukraine and its people for the second year. In the spirit of the festival, lectures and master classes are planned, while the concerts of the festival will take place in various venues throughout Riga, including the House of Blackheads, the Riga Wagner House, the Ziedon Hall of the Latvian National Library, the Anglican Church, cultural spaces “Ola Foundation” and “Amoralle Level Up”. The festival program will bring together musicians, bands and actors of Ukrainian classical and popular music, including Gundars Āboliņš, Dita Lūriņa, Larisa Semirozumenko, the string ensemble “Kremerata Lettonica”, pianist Georgijs Osokins, musicians Ralfs Eiland, Katrina Gupalo, Georges Siksna, Roberto Meloni.

“Tallinn Music Week”
From May 10 to 14, the annual festival-music conference – Tallinn Music Week will take place in Tallinn, Estonia. During it, it is possible to discover new musical talents (a total of 176 musicians from 41 countries), as well as the delights of the city – in the city’s galleries and restaurants. Concerts are mostly held in the club in the Teleskivi block, but not only there.

“Zagare Fringe Festival 2023”
From May 11 to 14, the alternative art festival “Žagarės Fringe Festival” will take place in Žagarė, Lithuania. In the program, artists will create works and perform in various disciplines, including visual arts, dance, theater and music. Festival “Process”
From May 17 to 21, the experimental film festival “Process” will take place in Riga, in the Wagon Hall, focusing this year on the theme of the “noise spectrum”, viewing it as a physical, mental and social phenomenon, and allowing for the diversity of cinema forms and viewing experiences. A noise that can both break and connect. In addition to the focus programs and events, three short film programs are expected at the festival with works of experimental cinema created in recent years by various authors from around the world.

“Under Festival”
On May 19 and 20, the electronic music festival “Under 2023” will take place in Riga, Tēraudlietuves Street 9. During these days, 40 artists will perform at the festival, including Tiga, Slam DJs, Alinka, Hard Ton, Holgers Zilske, “Radical Softness”, “Voicedrone”. Latvia will be represented by such artists as the duo “Taran & Lomov” from “Amber Muse”, Lévi from “Klik Klak”, “Crying Skies”, “Waterflower”, “mOZ & Herren Ivo”, Veronika Keris & Grisha Nirgov, as well as the duo Laiva Maikule and others.

festival “foRest”
On May 26 and 27, the second festival “foRest” established by the Latvian College of Culture will be held in Jaunsvirlaukas parish, Jelgava region. This year, the festival focuses on imprints – both those we leave with emotions and works, as well as the unstoppable processes of the surrounding nature, which will be examined in performances, master classes and fun conversations. The musical program of the festival will include the performances of the groups “Bēdu brāhdi”, “ŠŅK”, “Kasetes”, “DZ”, “Aston Kais”, “Polifauna”, Estonians “Talbot”, as well as Helena Kozlova and Katie Barbale and many others.

Karosta Festival
From June 5 to 11, the Karosta Festival will be held in Liepāja for the fifth time, the program of which includes an artists’ plein air, a ride of ancient vehicles, and various concerts. The events will take place in Redana Fort, 3rd elementary school, Karosta water tower, Atmodas garden, Karosta prison, Atmodas boulevard 21. The festival will feature wall paintings, various installations, performances, and a photo exhibition.

Italian music festival in Haapsala
On June 2, in Estonia, in the courtyard of the Haapsalu Bishop’s Palace, an Italian music festival will be held, where the singer Al Bano will perform this year. He is known for his hits “Felicita”, “Ci Sara” and “Tu Soltanto Tu”, which are synonymous with romantic Italian music. The Italian pop group “Matia Bazar”, which was formed in 1975 and represented Italy at Eurovision during its career, winning the Sanremo Music Festival twice, will also perform. The band’s best known songs are “Solo tu”, “Souvenir” and “Ti Sento”.

“R&B Blues Festival” in Ropaži
On June 10, the “R&B Blues Festival” will be held for the seventh year in the courtyard of the Ropaži Cultural Center, on the banks of the Great Jugla, offering both domestic musicians such as “Latvian Blues Band” and “Rahu The Fool”, as well as guests – the joint project of Poland and the USA “Wild Flame” will perform “, Danish Blues, funk meistari “Chris Grey & BlueSpand”.
“Jestival”
From June 13 to 15 in Riga, in the “M/Darbnīca” club, “Džeztivāls” will be held for the second year, in which the students of Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Academy of Music will perform their programs prepared throughout the year, while also passing the concert exam. This year, more than 40 students will take the stage of the festival in different formations. “Jezfestival” is an event organized by students, with the aim of popularizing the activity itself, jazz in general and, of course, the academy as well. Traditionally, on the last day of the festival, a special award of the head of the Jazz department is presented to the best student of the department – “Indriķas balva”.

“Unreal Festival”
On June 17, the “Unreal” festival will be held for the first time at the Mežaparks Grand Stage, the main artists of which will be “Dmitri Vegas & Like Mike”, “Tungevaag”, Mike William, “Plastik Funk”, Sammy Porter. Domestic performers DJ Makree, Magnus Eriņš, “NF3”, “Rexton”, Levan, “24k” and Bruno Drake will also take the stage. Augmented reality solutions will make the festival more exciting.
