At least 10 newborn babies died in a fire that broke out in the neonatal unit of a hospital in the city of Jhansi, in northern India, a government authority reported this Saturday.

“Unfortunately, 10 infants have died,” Brajesh Pathak, deputy chief minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh, told reporters about the fire that occurred Friday night.

“Seven bodies were identified, three bodies have not been identified yet,” he added.

The fire started at 10:30 p.m. (0400 GMT) this Friday at the Maharani Lakshmibai Medical University, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Another 16 infants remain in critical condition after the fire, according to the Times Now news site.

There were 54 infantrymen in the unit
NDTV reported that 54 babies were in the neonatal intensive care unit when the fire broke out.

Images from the site showed destroyed beds and walls inside the unit, while a crowd of distraught relatives waited outside.

The babies rescued from the fire, all days old, were laid side by side in a bed in another part of the hospital, where medical staff placed intravenous drip tubes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heartbreaking” in a post on X.

«My heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their innocent children in this. “I pray to God to give them the strength to face this immense pain,” he said.
