Fentanyl is a strong synthetic opioid that has recently caused a drug epidemic in the United States.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, 107,375 people in the United States died from drug overdoses in the 12 month period to January 2022. About 67 percent of these deaths were due to synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.

Cases of child deaths due to drugs are not the first time this has happened in the United States. In September 2022, a 15-year-old student in California died in his school bathroom from an overdose.

The student got the drugs from drug dealers operating in one of the parks in Los Angeles. The female student who originally intended to buy the Percocet was given a counterfeit pill laced with fentanyl.
