The author of Sex and the City reveals what happened to “her” Mr Big: rating 5
Her name is Candace Bushnell, she is 60 years old and three decades ago she had an idea that changed her life: to write a book entitled “Sex and the City”, also based on her own personal facts. The author, guest in connection with Splendida Cornice, talks about her “Mr. Big” (because yes, he really exists). “Once, it was the nineties, we came to Milan together and I remember it because on that holiday I did a lot of shopping”. However, it’s a question of priority and we agree. But are the two still in touch? “Yes, the last time was about three months ago – reveals the writer. Do you know what work he does now? I can hardly believe it myself! She moved to Vermont and set up a farm. He’s basically a farmer.” From Carrie Bradshaw’s point of view, she’s probably a real “slut”, but not for Candace: “I’d really like to live in the countryside, maybe I should think about it again”, she adds crypticly. It’s useless, you have to give up: a Mr. Big is forever.
John Travolta, the qua qua qua dance and We are The World: vote 9
“We Are the World – The night that changed pop” is a recently released Netflix documentary that tells, thanks also to archive images and above all to the testimonies of those who were there, the daring birth of that historic song. The increasingly brilliant authors of Splendida Cornice have managed to bring together John Travolta, the Sanremo Ballo del Qua Qua Gate, Chiara Galiazzo and the atmospheres of that doc, creating a masterpiece. “Italy for Travolta” thus becomes the campaign of anyone who wants to help the much scorned (from Amadeus and Fiorello) Hollywood star to pay the mortgage. All while singing “We are the John, We are the sneakers”. A ferocious and very pleasant parody, among the most brilliant strokes of genius of the entire episode. Run immediately to catch up on the performance on RaiPlay, if only because, as Cucciari well says, “We all love Travolta and would never again want to see him go from ‘Saturday Night Fever’ to Monday morning mortgage”. The number opens with an intense version of the now infamous Qua Qua Dance on the piano. I wish there had been authors at the Sanremo Festival capable of writing such a pleasure…
Valentine’s Day, celebration of lovers and divorce lawyers: rating 5-
On the evening of February 15th, the date on which San Faustino, the singles’ day, occurs, at Splendida Cornice we return to talking about Valentine’s Day. And it is done with the divorce lawyer Ester Viola who answers questions from the studio audience. Mariangela, for example, married for 16 years, questions her, at the request of her husband, asking her if “it is possible to have a marriage based on rental contracts. A contract that is renewable (or not) every three years, so that you don’t have to leave too painfully.” “Until death do you part” is the rule, however, therefore, although the underlying logic sounds fascinating, the wedding “in installments” should not be done. Sin. Nadia, then, is curious to know if it is allowed to obtain joint custody of pets and the lawyer is very intransigent on this: “It is agreed through a private agreement, there is no need to bring such a situation before a magistrate, because it is very irritating. If the two parties cannot find a solution that satisfies both, the dog or cat will decide who to follow, based on how fond it is of us.” Finally, a shocking discovery, thanks to Laura’s question: are there divorces that occur on Valentine’s Day? The answer is, perhaps surprisingly, yes. How come? Viola proceeds to asphalt every residual shred of hope towards the love of the average viewer, with a smile on her lips: “Very often the wife finds the receipt for a precious ring. Which, however, she did not receive”. Not to mention the silence of jewelers who, on average, “especially if they know the couple, know not to ever ask the person who should be directly interested whether she liked the jewel in question or not”. The world, seen through Viola’s eyes, is a terrible place to fall in love. We fail, but at the same time we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reminding us of this truth. After all, as Cucciari well says: “Valentine’s Day is the celebration of love. And divorce lawyers.”
Alba Rohrwacher directs “The Moon Landing at Cinecittà”: rating 7.5
Rai Finzioni, the fictitious production company conniving with Splendida Cornice, never stops giving joy. The episode of Thursday 15 February, for example, opens with the guest “in recorded connection” by Alba Rohrwacher who lent herself to create a clip for early conspiracy theorists. The moon landing, in fact, was not filmed, as urban legend would have it, by Kubrick in the United States, but by her in Cinecittà. In the trailer, we see her scolding the crew, deciding to do everything alone because she is surrounded by inefficient staff who don’t even speak a word of English. Really pleasant and dazed curtain, in every sense of the word, now all we have to do is demand “Moon Landing at Cinecittà” in theaters. We want to believe it, or rather, we believe it.
Brenda Lodigiani owes her name to Beverly Hills 90210 (?): rating 8+
That Splendida Cornice is a show with great attention to every detail can already be seen from the girths. In the case of the comedian Brenda Lodigiani we read, in fact, “Marcella Bella sings in the shower”. Could it be a spoiler on a new character that he will imitate in the next edition of GialappaShow, from April on TV8? It’s too early to say, but our time has certainly written an autobiographical book which also deals with her Sinti origins. “Oh, I have a diploma in Accounting, I would never have thought of writing an entire novel!”, she says with great authority. To ruin her every chance of recounting such a literary effort, however, Marco Santin and Giorgio Gherarducci, the Gialappis themselves, appear in connection, there to annoy her during the interview with Cucciari. Among the various skirmishes, it turns out that the two never laugh when Lodigiani offers them a “new and I like” sketch. “You could think about this,” invites Santin, ever the bastard. Finally, a funny biographical fact: the comedian fears she owes her first name to Brenda from the famous series Beverly Hills 90210 even though “I’ve never had the courage to ask my parents, I’m afraid of the answer”. If in doubt, she is the protagonist of the book she wrote, entitled “Light My Fire”, but her name is… Kelly. Yes, she makes you laugh. Even if the Gialappis, as expected, would remain very serious in the face of this stunt, here Brenda (both Lodigiani and Walsh) are cheering.
The French Saints do not speak to more than four people a day: rating 7
Unjustly defrauded at the Cover and Duets evening of the last Sanremo Festival, where they brought an amazing version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah together with Skin, the French Saints granted themselves their first post-Sanremo TV appearance at Splendida Cornice. Thus, the handsome Alessandro De Santis tells a bit of backstage about that magical evening behind the Ariston stage with the former voice of Skunk Anansie: “I was nervous, I was bombarding myself with Aerosol. Then she approached me and told me not to worry, her voice would arrive once on stage.” A wish that Geppi Cucciari immediately makes his own and passes on to him again to drag him into singing a church song in two voices (“You are my life/I have nothing else/You are my way/My truth”). De Santis, together with his friend Mario Francese, performed without protest, very much amused. Shortly before the performance both had expressed a certain allergy to people: they don’t want more than 15 in their circle of acquaintances, they say. Indeed, the frontman narrows the field even further: “In my days I will talk to a maximum of four people: Mario, mum, dad and girlfriend. I couldn’t stand more.” The two are about to perform in some Italian churches. For a deliberately very limited audience. “In fact there are very few tickets,” they announce proudly. True, pure misanthropes. We understand them.
Violante Placido, shooting hot scenes “is like drinking chamomile”: vote 8
Among the guests of the episode on Thursday 15 February also Violante Placido who, assisted by an intimacy coordinator (a professional figure who ensures that hot scenes in films and TV series go in the right direction, including the smell of those involved), tells how it is finding yourself having to interpret wild couplings and moments of intimacy in front of the camera. The actress immediately clarifies: “In life I am very shy and jealous of my body, I don’t even go topless at the seaside.” Despite this “When I played Moana I was no longer me, but the character. On set the best were the porn stars who always made me feel at ease, as if we were drinking chamomile tea.” It’s different, however, to play dirty scenes with someone who hasn’t made hardcore their profession: “There’s always a bit of embarrassment and no, no one really gets excited, on the contrary! When I had to do one with George Clooney I was very excited and so was he. We tried to tone down the tension with a few jokes until the ‘take’ and, above all, finally, the ‘stop’!”. Oh yes, what a hard life…
