Berlin (dpa) – 1. FC Union Berlin is using corona rapid tests for the first time in the Bundesliga for people who are in the An der Alten Försterei stadium as part of the special game operation. Fans are still excluded because of the pandemic.
Before the game against 1. FC Köln on Saturday (3:30 p.m.), the Berlin club offers authorized helpers, stewards, journalists and other people a free SARS-CoV-2 antigen rapid test.
From the process, knowledge should be gained for an operation when spectators are allowed again. The test results are linked to the personalized access authorization. “We want to be optimally prepared to be able to carry out a pilot project with viewers as soon as the appropriate approval has been given,” said Union’s head of communications, Christian Arbeit. The club had already worked on such a pilot project last year, but the increasing number of infections and the still limited testing options prevented implementation.
“The sufficient availability of corona rapid tests for widespread use in public life enables us to test the process line that was designed last summer on the basis of our guiding principle in practice,” noted Arbeit. Testing on matchday is on a voluntary basis. Alternatively, the previously prescribed admission protocol for the special game operation can be used. The valid hygiene rules remain unaffected by the tests.
