It’s no surprise that 1. FC Union Berlin will sign another defender for the back three. In fact, it’s no longer a surprise that Leonardo Bonucci is apparently the wanted Mister X. A star of world football, European champion with Italy two years ago with almost six million followers on Instagram. He enjoys legendary status in his homeland.
The fact that the people from Köpenick are now also moving to the big lakes to catch the big fish has not only been known since the transfers of Robin Gosens and Kevin Volland. But the name of Bonucci comes with a different radiance.
As the Italian transfer experts Fabrizio Romano and Gianluca Di Marzio report, the talks between 1. FC Union Berlin and Juventus Turin are said to be well advanced. Only the player himself would have to make his final commitment, then nothing stands in the way of a change of club.

Despite his undoubtedly great successes – in Italy he won the championship nine times and the cup four times – one has to admit that the 36-year-old has already passed his sporting zenith. Two years ago he became European champion with the Squadra Azzurra, scoring a goal against England in the final to save his side into extra time and then penalties. After that, however, things didn’t go too well for Bonucci, especially at club level. Juventus, the club he has been with for 13 years apart from a one-year hiatus at AC Milan (2017/18 season), has let himself be sported in Italy. Coach Massimiliano Allegri no longer finds a use for him.
Bonucci would not be set as a regular player with the Irons. Robin Knoche, Danilho Doekhi and Diogo Leite form a reliable chain that needs another alternative in view of the heavy workload with three competitions starting in September. In the large squad of fourth-placed players from the previous season there are – as of now – two more professionals in Paul Jaeckel and Dominique Heintz who can play there.
