In the run-up to the 2022/23 season, 1. FC Union Berlin signed Diogo Leite on loan from FC Porto. Almost a year later, the Irons have now pulled the agreed purchase option.
Regular players with no teething problems
After his arrival in Berlin-Köpenick, the 24-year-old quickly established himself as an important building block in the defensive line of Union coach Urs Fischer. Of a possible 48 games in all competitions, he completed 40 and only five of them did not last the full 90 minutes.
In his first season in the German football league, the central defender managed an assist and as a reward for the good performance, the first squad nomination for the Portuguese national team followed in March 2023.

“I felt very comfortable here at Union right from the start and I’m all the happier that I was able to show good performances. The season was very successful and a lot of fun. I hope that things will continue like this and that we achieve our goals,” said the Portuguese about his move.
“Diogo immediately established himself as a regular player for us and, with a few exceptions, was already very productive in the first year. It was therefore clear to us that we wanted to keep a player with his skills, his mentality and his commitment at the club. We also believe that Diogo still has further room for improvement and we look forward to continuing to work with him,” commented Union’s professional football manager Oliver Ruhnert on the transfer.
