For 1. FC Köln, the crucial hours for the club’s near future begin on Tuesday. Will the billy goats succeed in appealing against the FIFA ban before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)?
Did 1. FC Köln and Olimpija Ljubljana agree on a payment for Jaka Cuber Potocnik before the CAS hearings? This will be a crucial question that will be answered on Tuesday when the two clubs appear before the sports tribunal.
The GEISSBLOG knows: There have been several meetings in the last few weeks. Accordingly, sports director Christian Keller and finance director Philipp Türoff stayed in Munich at least twice to negotiate with, among others, the vice president Christian Dollinger and the managing director Igor Barisic of the Slovenian club.
Approaching a million euros?
And there is actually said to have been a rapprochement in these discussions. After Ljubljana subsequently demanded 2.5 million euros for Potocnik in the summer of 2022, the Slovenians are said to have gradually moved downwards – initially to two million and later to 1.5 million euros.
Other models with a stake in the event of resale are also said to have been discussed. The FC, in turn, is said to have gradually approached the Slovenians with an offer in the six-figure range. However, it remains unclear whether an agreement was actually reached that could now be presented to the CAS.
Would an agreement help at all?
It is also unclear what an agreement would bring. There would still be an accusation that 1. FC Köln incited Potocnik to breach the contract. This would not be refuted even by an out-of-court settlement – and FIFA would still have an interest in enforcing the transfer ban against the billy goats.
The International Court of Arbitration for Sport will meet on Tuesday and will hear witnesses from both clubs and the players. FIFA is due to make its statements on Wednesday. It is not known when the verdict can be expected. When asked by GEISSBLOG, the CAS simply said that this would not happen immediately. An exact period is unknown.
