1. FC Köln: Members should decide: buy a stadium with the help of investors? – Bundesliga

Cologne’s board bosses after 21 rather weak months in the constant fire of the fans. And before the general meeting on Thursday under pressure like never before. Is your biggest taboo now falling?

At the last members’ get-together in front of around 1200 virtually connected FC supporters – just before the explosive club meeting – the board of directors would play a role backwards on the topic of investor entry.

Vice-boss Carsten Wettich, who will be elected on Thursday: “If you take a closer look at the topic of investors, there can only be one useful case to think about investors. Namely when it comes to high investments that are needed. For example, a stadium, which you buy and expand and where you then take an investor in in order to earn more money in the long term with a larger stadium.

In plain language: The purchase and expansion plans for the stadium, initiated by finance boss Alexander Wehrle two years ago, are not off the table.

And: The board of directors can imagine relying on investors for such a mammoth project. After all, the fact is that an expansion to more than 75,000 places significantly exceeds the 200 million mark in costs and is inconceivable without an investor.

More income from a larger and own stadium – co-financed by a donor who is not supposed to get any voting rights or club shares. “Don’t invest in legs, rather in stones,” says President Werner Wolf (64) about the plans. In the end, however, the members should decide on this.

Wettich on the regulars table: “We want to take our members with us. The association belongs to you members and you have to decide how we will deal with investors in the future. “

The debate should start in July. Panel discussions, member surveys and votes are planned. Wettich: “The discussion about investors in Cologne is extremely emotional. There are extreme supporters and many opponents. We as the board of directors have to be able to get everyone around the table. “
