Tough cup fight: On February 3, 2021, Jahn Regensburg triumphed with Kaan Caliskaner (right) in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup after a penalty shoot-out against 1. FC Köln around Benno Schmitz. Now the duel will be repeated in the first round of 2022/23.

It has been official since Sunday (May 29, 2022): 1. FC Köln have to play second division club SSV Jahn Regensburg in the first round of the DFB Cup. Here’s Cologne’s big cup record.
Bitter déjà vu or the great redemption? 1. FC Köln must have followed the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup on Sunday evening (May 29, 2022) with mixed feelings. Los-Fee Kevin Großkreutz (33) gave the billy goats in the Dortmund Football Museum a very piquant opponent right on the first move: second division side SSV Jahn Regensburg.
Ostbayern, where FC has to play between July 29th and August 1st, undoubtedly brings back unpleasant memories in Cologne. Specifically: On February 3, 2021, Regensburg caught up a 2-0 deficit in the round of 16 – and finally threw the Bundesliga club out of the competition after a true penalty thriller (4: 3). From Cologne’s point of view it is clear: Now the mission of revenge is imminent for coach Steffen Baumgart (50) and his team.
1. FC Köln: The big record in the DFB Cup
And: Cologne’s competitive record against Regensburg is positive despite the bitter cup elimination a year ago. The two clubs have met five times so far: twice in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2012/13 and 2018/19 (three Cologne wins, one defeat). And that February last year in the cup round of 16.
At the time, it was one of several low points in Cologne’s almost relegation season. And the record so far in the DFB Cup has also been characterized by ups and downs.
The record so far: FC have played 63 times in the cup so far. Ten times it was over in the first round, most recently in the 2007/08 season against the second team from Werder Bremen (2:4 after extra time on August 5, 2007 – at that time reserve teams were still eligible to start in the DFB Cup). But: The journey also led to the final ten times. There, however, the quota looks less pleasing: Six finals (1954, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1980 and 1991) were lost.
