1. FC Köln: DFB sports court confirms hammer penalty

Among other things, the pyro igniting the FC fans at the away game in Stuttgart on May 14, 2022 was sanctioned.

The DFB sports court has confirmed the hefty fines against 1. FC Köln. Now it’s time to go to federal court.

1. FC Köln’s appeal against the high fines by the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) was unsuccessful for the time being. As the DFB announced on Thursday (July 14, 2022), the four sanctions imposed on the Bundesliga club totaling 231,200 euros were confirmed in a written procedure.

At the beginning of July, they were imposed in a single-judge procedure, against which the FC had lodged an objection. The club now has the opportunity to appeal to the DFB Federal Court within a week. The club had recently announced that this would be done if necessary.

FC sports boss Christian Keller: “Sentence disproportionately high”

“The objections of 1. FC Köln against the sanctions imposed in the four individual judges’ judgments remain unsuccessful,” says Stephan Oberholz, the chairman of the DFB sports court: “Circumstances that would be suitable for reducing the fines in the present cases are neither more specific been presented or otherwise visible to the sports court.”

Cologne fans had in the games at Union Berlin (April 1, 60,000 euros), against FSV Mainz (April 9, 18,000 euros) and VfL Wolfsburg (May 7, 36,000 euros) and at VfB Stuttgart (May 14 , 117,200 euros) ignited pyrotechnic objects to a considerable extent.

The peaceful attack by more than 1,000 fans in Cologne after the Wolfsburg game was also sanctioned. Despite a 0-1 defeat, FC had qualified for the playoffs in the Conference League perfectly.

Sports boss Christian Keller (43) said after the punishment was announced: “We think the penalty is disproportionately high. It does not take into account the particular pandemic-related challenges our club is going through. In addition, we consider the approach of the DFB in the phase after the return of the active fan scene to be wrong and not effective.

President Werner Wolf (65) added: “We all wish for a peaceful, safe coexistence of the fan cultures in the stadium, but we are continuing a practice that is known to have no positive effects on the existing challenges. A reflective discussion between fans, those responsible, the association and clubs would be more effective. We see an opportunity to start these debates again.” (sid/mze)
