Three scorers from Kleindienst
With a historic success, 1. FC Heidenheim refined the record game of its coach Frank Schmidt. The promoted team celebrated its first win in the Bundesliga on Sunday with a 4:2 (2:0) win against SV Werder Bremen. And the coach broke a record set by Volker Finke: Schmidt took over Heidenheim 16 years ago to the day and is now the longest-serving coach in German professional football.
Schmidt didn’t want to deal intensively with this record in advance. “For me it’s not that important. What is much more important is that the team took this path,” said the 49-year-old, who has looked after the FCH since the league. And had double reason to celebrate on Sunday. The goalscorers Tim Kleindienst (5th/hand penalty) and Werder loanee Eren Dinkci (44th/68th) as well as ex-Bremer Jan-Niklas Beste (76th) made it possible. After the goals from Joker Marvin Ducksch (49th) and Mitchell Weiser (64th), Werder could only hope for something countable for a quarter of an hour. After four games, the Heidenheimers have four points on their account, one point more than the Bremen team, who suffered their third defeat this season.

The game started with excitement: Anthony Jung was only able to clear the best free kick in the penalty area illegally. A total of four penalties had already been whistled in the last two games involving Heidenheim. Now the home team was allowed to compete for the third time after referee Patrick Ittrich had examined the television images again. Kleindienst transformed serenely.
Bremen reacted with uncertainty. The 15,000 spectators in the sold-out Voith Arena didn’t see the guests finish for a long time. The home side were vulnerable to conceding goals in the early stages of the season, especially in the early stages. Heidenheim remained the more dangerous team in the duel between the relegation participants in 2019/20, when Bremen was able to stay in the league with two draws. Kleindienst shot over the goal from a tight angle (27′) and Dinkci flicked the ball past after half an hour. Five minutes before the break, however, things became dangerous: Jens Stage, however, managed the trick of sending the ball over the goal from about a meter away. Dinkci did better on the other side, shaking off the Bremen defense and also leaving Jiri Pavlenka no chance to defend.
After the break, it only took three minutes for the video referee to speak for the second time. The decision was in Bremen’s favor: Ducksch scored in the margin after his penalty and gave Ole Werner’s team hope again. The prospects seemed even better after Weiser’s equalizer, before Dinkci and Beste struck back again for the very well-positioned FCH. With combined forces and driven by the loud supporters in the narrow stadium, the promoted team did not allow their opponents to come back into the game.
