With a historic success, 1. FC Heidenheim refined the record game of its coach Frank Schmidt. The promoted team celebrated its first win in the Bundesliga on Sunday with a 4:2 (2:0) win against SV Werder Bremen. And the coach broke a record set by Volker Finke: Schmidt took over Heidenheim 16 years ago to the day and is now the longest-serving coach in German professional football.

Schmidt didn’t want to deal intensively with this record in advance. “For me it’s not that important. What is much more important is that the team took this path,” said the 49-year-old, who has looked after the FCH since the league. And had double reason to celebrate on Sunday. The game started with excitement: Anthony Jung was only able to clear the best free kick in the penalty area illegally. The prospects seemed even better after Weiser’s equalizer, before Dinkci and Beste struck back again for the very well-positioned FCH. With combined forces and driven by the loud supporters in the narrow stadium, the promoted team did not allow their opponents to come back into the game.
