1. Bundesliga: Union: standing room ban in the European Cup must be put to the test – news

Despite the soaring in the Bundesliga, 1. FC Union Berlin does not deviate from its goal of relegation. The ban on standing room at European Cup matches imposed by UEFA is a thorn in the side of the iron given the situation in the An der Alten Försterei stadium.

At the virtual general meeting, managing director Oskar Kosche admitted to a question asked online by a fan that the topic for a possible qualification for the international competition was not ignored and the applicable rules were questioned.

“On the one hand, we are of course planning how this is technically feasible,” said Kosche about a possible temporary conversion from standing to seating. “On the other hand, you have to be very clear that it is now perhaps the situation to talk about the existing rules, sometimes to start a discussion about why different rules actually apply to international games than to the Bundesliga. Rules that the majority of clubs do not want to this extent », said Kosche.

The European Football Union (UEFA) prohibits standing room for games in the Champions League, the Europa League and also in the third-rate Conference League, which will be played from the coming season. The Union venue in the Berlin district of Köpenick has a capacity of 22,012 spectators. Only a good 3,600 fans have seats in the main stand. Both grandstands behind the goals and the back straight offer standing room only.

So far, coach Urs Fischer and manager Oliver Ruhnert had refused any discussion about qualifying for a European Cup, although the current eighth table was partially in fourth place and thus on a Champions League place. Kosche also affirmed that the second year of the Bundesliga is all about staying up. Should Union qualify for international business in this or ten years from now, a solution will be found to be able to play in its own stadium.
