On the last double match day in the first half of the season, the question for 1. BC Beuel is whether the goal they have set in the Badminton Bundesliga can still be achieved. The team around team leader Hannah Pohl also has to cope with great travel demands. The game starts on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the far north at Blau-Weiß Wittorf-Neumünster, and on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. the away game is on TV Refrath.
Somehow things are not going well for the three-time German team champions this season. The only win this season came on the second matchday with a 5-2 win in Munich. And if the team doesn’t manage to get four points, i.e. two narrow victories, at the weekend, the season’s goal of fourth place would become a long way off.
Both teams are direct competitors. To strengthen the core team with Hannah Pohl, Brid Stepper, Max Weißkirchen, Felix Hammes and Daniel Hess, two more players, the Danish Clara Graversen and the Englishman Zach Russ, are coming this weekend. Beuel’s young player Sanjeevi Padmanabhan Vasudevan, however, will only join the team on Sunday. “The team is definitely stronger with Clara and Zach,” assures Thilo Mund. However, the sporting director and team manager of the first team is clearly holding back with a prediction: “These will be two open and probably even games. We just never know who the opponent is.”
In Wittorf the team will meet numerous exceptional German players, including the reigning German champion Matthias Kicklitz, Franziska Volkmann and the ex-Bonner Patrick Scheiel, who is Beuel’s Daniel Hess’ doubles partner at international level. The exertions of the weekend could play a decisive role. It starts on Friday afternoon to Lower Saxony and continues on Saturday morning. Immediately after the game, the bus is ready again and the players drive back to Bonn until the night. The journey to the derby against Refrath on Sunday is much more relaxed. Everyone always looks forward to the duels with Refrath, in which Fabian Roth is one of the best men’s singles players. But the hosts are also brilliantly staffed in other positions, for example with the Scot Adam Hall or the doubles specialist Jan Colin Völker.
