A brazen robbery spree on a busy Jakarta toll road has left authorities scrambling. A husband and wife became victims of a gang of robbers who preyed on motorists stuck in a traffic jam on the Tanjung Priok Access Toll Road in North Jakarta. While one suspect,M Ali Sanda,is in custody, five accomplices remain at large.
The North Jakarta Metro Police revealed a coordinated effort by the robbers. “The target area for the perpetrators’ operations was around the Plumpang toll Road. So, before the incident occurred, the perpetrators first gathered in the area around the crime scene,” explained AKP Fauzan Yonnandi, head of the North Jakarta Metro Police Jatanras Unit, in a statement on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
the gang strategically chose moments of heavy congestion to strike, targeting vehicles with open windows. Yonnandi added,”After that, they saw the condition of the road,it was congested, they promptly took action. So this (the congested road) became a momentum for the perpetrators to carry out a sweep targeting cars with open windows.”
Multiple Victims, Violent Tactics
The robbers employed intimidation tactics, wielding sharp, sickle-like weapons to threaten victims into surrendering their belongings. “then they came to the car and made threats and then took the victim’s belongings,” said Yonnandi.
At least two separate incidents occurred on Friday, January 3, 2025. In one instance, a couple was targeted while stopped in traffic. Kombes Ade Ary Syam Indradi, Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, described the scene: “Then six perpetrators arrived carrying sharp weapons who immediately blocked the victim’s car and tried to attack the victim’s wife from the side.”
The robbers escaped with the couple’s cell phone. Another car was robbed near the toll road exit, where a robber demanded money from the driver. Both incidents have been reported to the North Jakarta Metro Police.
Manhunt Underway
While M Ali Sanda is in custody, the police are actively pursuing his five accomplices: Aji, Anggi, Tedi, and two others whose names have not yet been released. North Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Ahmad Fuady stated, ”We are still developing the hunt for other perpetrators. though, we have arrested the main perpetrator (ali Sanda), who carried the sickle,” in a statement on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

Jakarta toll Road robberies: A Growing Concern for Drivers
this interview delves into the recent series of brazen robberies plaguing Jakarta’s toll roads. We speak with Dr.rosalindchong, a security expert specializing in urban crime, about these bold attacks and what they mean for the safety of Jakarta’s commuters.
Dr. Chong, thank you for joining us.
Dr.Chong: It’s my pleasure to be here.
The modus Operandi of the Toll Road Gang
These robberies seem very well-planned. Can you tell us more about the tactics used by these perpetrators?
Dr.Chong: The robbers are clearly targeting vulnerable situations. Heavy traffic congestion provides them with the perfect cover. They’re using sharp weapons, likely to instill fear and ensure quick compliance from their victims. Targeting cars with open windows suggests premeditation and a focus on easy targets.
Vulnerable Targets and public Safety
What does this tell us about the current state of security on Jakarta’s roads?
Dr. Chong: These attacks highlight a growing concern for commuters in Jakarta. The brazen nature of these robberies suggests a lack of visible deterrence. Criminals are exploiting weaknesses in traffic flow and law enforcement visibility. It underscores the need for increased police patrols, especially in known congestion hotspots, and perhaps even increased CCTV coverage.
What Can Drivers Do to Protect Themselves?
With these frightening incidents on the rise, are there steps drivers can take to minimize their risk?
Dr. Chong: drivers need to be extremely vigilant, especially in congested areas. Keep windows rolled up when possible, and avoid displaying valuables in plain sight. Be mindful of your surroundings, and if you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the police.
The police have arrested one suspect but are still looking for his accomplices. What do you think needs to happen to bring these criminals to justice and prevent future incidents?
Dr. Chong: The swift arrest of one suspect is a good sign, but catching the remaining perpetrators is crucial. It sends a message that these crimes won’t be tolerated. However, it’s not just about arrests. Authorities need to address the root causes of this type of crime. This involves tackling socio-economic issues, providing opportunities for at-risk youth, and ensuring adequate community policing.
Thank you for your insights, Dr. Chong. We hope this interview raises awareness and encourages drivers to take precautions while authorities work to address this alarming trend.
