ANNOUNCEMENTS•
An earthquake occurred shortly after midnight near the Groningen village of Froombosch. According to measurements by the KNMI, the quake was of magnitude 1.9.
Froombosch is located east of the city of Groningen, near Slochteren. Several people indicate that they have felt vibrations, signals RTV North.
Witnesses tell the regional broadcaster that they have heard blows and vibrations. Nothing is known about the damage at the moment.
Mayor Adriaan Hoogendoorn of Central Groningen municipality, which includes Froombosch, says on Twitter that I heard a clear bang at close range. “It looked like an underground explosion.”
Due to gas mining, earthquakes occur more often in Groningen. There were several earthquakes in Wirdum last October. The heaviest had a strength of 3.1. That quake led to nearly 200 reports of damage.
