(CNN) – Federal agents have discovered a drug trafficking tunnel that extends about a mile and a half, the longest ever discovered along the southwest border.
The 1.3 km tunnel begins in Tijuana, Mexico, about 76 meters south of the border. Travel underground to San Diego County, California.
It is equipped with air ventilation, electricity, an extensive rail and car system, and even an elevator at each entrance, according to the US Customs and Border Protection Office. UU. (CBP).
“The sophistication of this tunnel demonstrates the determination and monetary resources of the cartels,” said John W. Callery, special agent in charge of the Drug Control Administration (DEA) in a statement Wednesday.
“Although the cartels will continue to use their resources to try to cross our border, the DEA and our partners in the Tunnel Task Force will continue to use our resources to ensure that they fail, that our border is secure and that tunnels like this are closed to stop the flow of deadly drugs entering U.S“.

The tunnel, discovered by the CBP and its allies after a multi-year investigation, is 20 meters underground and is approximately 1.5 meters high and 60 cm wide.
The discovery has not yet led to arrests or seizures. But agents will continue their investigation, according to CBP patrol chief agent Aaron Heitke.
“I am sure that our hard work and dedication to enforce the law will lead to future arrests and seizures,” Heitke said in a statement.
The next longest tunnel was also discovered in San Diego in 2014 and was 993 meters long.
