Good morning! Russia is chair of the UN Security Council for a month, in the Netherlands there is a deposit on cans from today and your laces are loose.
First the weather: cloudy and rainy for a long time. Later this afternoon it will be slightly drier in the north. What can you expect today?
- Russia presides over the UN Security Council for one month. The US has called on Russia to act as president because Washington fears that the country will spread disinformation. The Kremlin said it will do “what it is entitled to”.
- As of today there is a deposit on cans, 15 cents per can. There are hand-in machines in 27,000 places. At supermarkets, the money goes back to the customer who returns the cans. At cinemas and sports clubs, for example, it has been agreed that it will go to a good cause.
- Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets in Israel again to protest Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government and the weakening of the Supreme Court’s power.

Many critical voices about the government’s compromise on the nitrogen crisis. Prime Minister Rutte announced last night that nitrogen policy will be put on the back burner, as long as negotiations are conducted in the provinces under the leadership of BBB. Rutte also said that the cabinet will accelerate, but did not say how exactly.
The opposition in the House of Representatives is furious. BBB leader Van der Plas believes that Rutte should come up with clarity. She advocates, among other things, for an emergency law. Kuiken of the PvdA speaks of an “emergency measure” and an almost “absurd” situation. GroenLinks leader Klaver calls Rutte’s explanation “hallucinatory”, SP leader Marijnissen speaks of a “political trick” and Wilders of the PVV believes that a cabinet crisis is inevitable.
Farmers, builders and nature clubs are also critical of the “nitrogen break”. Farmers’ organization Agractie thinks that the messages from The Hague come across as “total chaos”. Environmental organization Natuur & Milieu is also not happy about it. “It is another attack on nature, and it does not help farmers and our country any further. It is only a postponement of the problem and everyone remains in uncertainty for longer.”
